Hope in Chinese Symbols

King Solomon, one of the wisest men who ever lived, once said:
"Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life." (Prov. 13:12)
You have probably hoped for many things in this life. You have hoped for a good family. You have hoped to earn lots of money. You have hoped for a nice education, good grades and a successful career. Perhaps you have placed such hopes of yours in Chinese symbols. You have hoped that by gaining what these Chinese symbols represent, that you might prosper, gaining prestige and the respect of your family and friends and colleagues.
Perhaps you have hoped for something else in life. However, thoughts of God and Eternity have not been a priority in your life as you have pursued such goals as money, family, and material blessings. You have been very wise in your own eyes. You believe that you have made wise choices in this life.
Although you have been filled with hopes for a better life, many of those things you have spent your life hoping for have not been obtained by you. Perhaps a few of your hopes have been realized. Nevertheless, even such realized hopes have not truly satisfied you or have seemed less satisfying after you finally received them. Other hopes have not been realized at all.
You still have hopes in your life and your life is not over yet. Nevertheless, another wise prophet once said:
"Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit." (Jeremiah 17:7-8)
Do you have hope in God? Have you prepared for Eternity? Is it wise for you to forget to prepare for Eternity, when Eternity lasts forever, while this life on earth is so very, very short?
"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Mark 8:36-37)
Perhaps you will one day be rich. Perhaps you will some day become very, very wealthy. When you die, how much of this wealth will you be able to take with you? The answer is, that you cannot take any wealth with you at all when you die. Therefore, you need to prepare now for what will happen to you after you die.
I know that many Chinese believe that it is "bad luck" to talk about death. On the other hand, if you are going to be wise, then you need to prepare for death, since you will surely die some day. How wise would it be for a man to not prepare his will, or at least to make some preparation for his own death? Should a man not prepare his will because to do so would bring him "bad luck"? Of course not. He will prepare his will because it is wise for him to prepare his will. In the same way, you must think about death in order to prepare for death -- so that you can be wise about death.
If you do not prepare for death and for meeting God after you die, then you are being very foolish and unwise. Do you want to be foolish and unwise?
